A New Era

The team that undertook the Red Cross/ LDS church conversion project was made up of local professionals. Portico Properties Inc., a small family-owned company, along with Alvin Reinhard Fritz Architect Inc, began the planning process in mid 2012. Alvin Fritz, the architect, studied building preservation in Munich, Germany in 1985 and graduated from the University of British Columbia, receiving the gold medal of distinction. Alvin Fritz has practiced architecture across Canada for over 25 years.

The architect’s working relationship with Silver Ridge Construction precipitated a working arrangement to demolish the interior of the building and refit the entire shell with six dwellings. Silver Ridge began working in October 2012. Cory Brandsma lead the construction team for 4 months, handling many custom details in a timely and thorough manner. The inside of the project is completely new construction.

The project could not have been viable without the participation of the Alberta Historic Resources Foundation. Grants were provided to subsidized the remedial work.
